The AAC has worked diligently since 1999 to establish an effective organization that can benefit families and agencies. The AAC focus on supporting other specialist, organizations and agencies, maintaining and improving services and resources for people with autism.
In 1999, a diverse group of advanced clinicians united to launched a new non-profit organization for credentialing and continuing education for organizations and service providers in the autism field. From this modest beginning, The American Autism Council was formed. The goal of this group was to provide a forum for senior executives from like-minded organizations to meet, share ideas and solve problems. In 2000, the invitation to participate was expanded to other clinicians that demonstrated a commitment to serving individuals with autism and the use of an evidence-based treatment approach. Responding to participant feedback, AAC pledged to offer a different kind of opportunity growth through accrediting autism service providers and providing continuing education and certifications for specialist. In 2002, leaders of AAC recognized the need to formalize the council to meet the growing needs of service providers and the people they serve. The council leaders met in May 2002 to identify the mission, values and set the strategic direction of the council
